Stop living in the Thens and Laters
We are often so busy with our yesterdays and tomorrows that we forget the only thing that is actually real: the present. When our minds are busy, they are essentially time travelers.
We bounce between reflections of the past—”The Thens”—and anxiety about the future—”The Laters.” But while our minds wander across these timelines, we lose touch with the truth of our current situation.
The Illusion of the Past and Future
The “Thens” are often coloured by our perception and the stories we’ve told ourselves over the years. We can’t even be certain if what we remember is exactly what happened. Most importantly, we cannot change it. The past’s only true value is that it formed who you are today.
The “Laters” are even more untouchable. While we can plan and prepare, the future is not entirely adjustable through our worry. What will actually happen is often beyond our control.
So, what is left? The Now. Bringing your attention to the present moment is the only way to pull the mind away from the exhaustion of overthinking.
3 Ways to Anchor Yourself in the Present
If you find yourself time-traveling, use these three anchors to pull yourself back to the current dot on the timeline
- Sensory Awareness
Engaging with your senses—noticing sounds, textures, or scents—immediately grounds you.
Example: As I write this blog, my mind could easily wander through a dozen different timelines. Instead, I choose to focus on the sound of my dog, Ivana, snoring peacefully next to me. Suddenly, I am back in my chair, fully present and writing.
- The Art of Single-Tasking
Multitasking is often a sign that we aren’t in the present. It leads to mental overwhelm and a lack of focus.
Example: This is one of my major pitfalls. To train myself, I now use a kitchen timer. I set it for just 5 minutes and commit to doing one thing only. No switching, no “just checking one email.” Just one task. It’s simple, but transformative.
- Listening to Silence
Sitting in stillness without external distractions deepens your inner peace.
The Reality: For me, this is the hardest one. Most days, I am not grounded enough to sit in total silence. But on the days I manage it? It feels incredibly strong and powerful. It is the ultimate way to face the “Now” without any filters.
